Celebrate North American Stallions: Leatherdale Farms

Celebrate North American Stallions!

a series from Warmblood Stallions of North America

Leatherdale Farms
is a name that has been recognized by breeders in North America and in Europe for decades. Doug and Louise Leatherdale began breeding in the late 1980s, at first with Hanoverian jumpers, and then with dressage horses, and have been honored with multiple awards. Doug was president of the American Hanoverian Society for nine years, and they also worked closely with German breeders, allowing them to take advantage of what Europe had to offer. Their influence has been huge and felt in many ways, through their active participation and their philanthropy.

Leatherdale Farms' first stallion was His Highness, who was the top-selling stallion and champion of the 2002 Hanoverian licensing, and they gradually added to their stallion roster, keeping the stallions in Europe. Under American ownership but living in Europe, the stallions have been able to make their mark in European competition.

Louise continued with her involvement after Doug's passing in 2015, and in 2017 she made a huge splash in American breeding when she brought four of her stallions here. Standing at Bridlewood Farm in Kentucky, they offered American breeders some great new choices for fresh semen as well as frozen.

"My four 'boys' standing in Kentucky - EH Herzensdieb, Fairbanks, Hampton and First Dance - were brought over from our stallion station in Germany in order to offer the breeders of North America the best of conformation, movement, competitive ability and temperament. They do all that and more! Add to that Damsey FRH, Beltano, and His Highness with frozen semen and you have the best to offer for the competitive edge needed in dressage!"

Louise's breeding goal remains the same: creating "a real match between our wonderful US and Canadian mares and the stallions offered by Leatherdale Farms."
