Urthago HS Selected to Attending Holsteiner Stallion Approvals in Holstein

Urthago HS free jump
September 30, 2019

Hyperion Stud-bred and -owned Urthago HS (v. Uriko/My Lord Carthago/Casall/Carthago), from stamm 474a, has been selected to attend the Holsteiner stallion approvals in Holstein, Germany this fall.

Every year in August hundreds of two-year-old colts are presented to the Holsteiner Verband stallion selection committee in Elmshorn, Germany. Of those presented the committee then pre-selects the colts who will be eligible to attend the stallion licensing in October. They are selected based upon their quality in type, movement, jumping ability and pedigree. The stallion licensing spans three days as the colts are presented in-hand on hard ground, at liberty and in free jumping. On the final day the approved stallions are announced, and for the owners who have opted to participate, auctioning of the approved and non-approved stallions.

Urthago HS is a 2-year-old colt that was bred and raised at Hyperion Stud’s operation based in Holstein, Germany. He has a most interesting pedigree. His sire line boasts some of the best show jumpers the world has ever seen including Untouchable, Carthago and Casall who are legends of showjumping. In the line of 4 we find perfect sex balanced linebreeding to Carthago through his son Mylord Carthago and the Carthago daughter Ligusta, who herself received a 10 for jumping at her mare performance test.

The Cor de la Bryère mare is none other than Cicera, full sister of the legend Cavalier Royale and Cicero. Cicera is also mother of the approved stallion Cicera's Icewater by Corofino I. Many international sporthorses and approved stallions have come from this motherline. VDL Groep Spiga , Kyra, Verdi and Calato just to name a few.

To find out more about the stallion approval process, schedule and results visit the Holsteiner Verband's website https://www.holsteiner-verband.de/en/. For more information about Hyperion Stud horses and breeding program, please visit hyperionstud.com.

Dressage at Devon: Day 2: Future Dressage Stars

Gjenganger, Grand Champion
September 26, 2019 (Devon, PA) – The sun shone on Day 2 at Dressage at Devon as the Breed Show continued with future champions everywhere you looked!

Just a few highlights:

Gjenganger, a 3-year old, 16.2, chestnut mare, owned by Alice Tarjan of Loxahatchee, Florida was a true star. She won the 3- year old Materiale Class with a score of 83.10, as well as the Filly Championship, the Young Horse Championship, and the Grand Championship.

Newport Jazz WRF, Colt/Gelding Champion
Newport Jazz WRF (Everdale/Zippidy DO Dah WRF) took home the blues in the Colt/Gelding Championship and the Yearling Colts/Geldings.

Spirit’s Celeste (Primal Thunder/Triplesweet Trinity) has been racking up the ribbons at the Dressage at Devon Breed Show.  The four-month-old Morgan filly has won five classes these past two show days: IBC: Morgan, Pony Fillies of the Current Year, Pony Foal Championship, Pony Young Horse Championship, and Reserve Champion of the National Dressage Pony Cup.

Lindsey Berry, owner of Spirit’s Celeste, says “she is just like her father: kind, quiet, and eager to please.” Primal Thunder, sire of Spirit’s Celeste, has a dream temperament that any trainer/rider looks for in a horse, according to Lindsey.  Like her sire, Spirit’s Celeste was very obedient, patient, and sweet in the ring; winning the hearts of the judges and the Dressage at Devon staff.

Berry is also a part of the Rainbow Morgan Horse Association, an organization that advocates for the Morgan breed performing in any discipline. “If it is a good talented sport horse, it can be anything it wants to be. A talented horse is a talented horse” Berry said. “The Morgan breed had an excellent representation this year.”

Thursday will feature the USDFBC Finals and the start of the Performance Division. Don’t forget to take a break to visit the great shops and the Silent Auction!

Opening Day at Dressage at Devon 2019

Warmblood Stallions of North America is proud to be a sponsor of Dressage at Devon!

September 24, 2019 (Devon, PA) - It doesn't get much cuter than watching foals as they first experience the Dixon Oval. But it's especially fun when it's under the shining sun!

Individual Breed Classes
From the adorable Haflingers to the impressive Hanoverians and Oldenburgs, more than 15 breeds showed attendees what careful breeding can do to develop and strengthen a breed. They were all winners but the top three scorers were:

Kandyvrowe (Glocks Toto Jr. x Fergievrouwe), a 2015 Hanoverian mare bred by M.Hendrikden-de-Rijk, and owned by Iron Spring Farm, earned the high score of 81.850.
Gypsy ISF (Tjalbert 460 x Goaitske fan e), a Friesian bred by Iron Spring Farm, scored a 80.60.
Sophistikate, a Hanoverian handled by Francine Gentile, was third high scorer with a score of 79.250.

Hanoverians, Oldenburgs, Dutch Warmbloods are familiar favorites. Others, while well-loved and appreciated by their owners and breeders, are not so well known. Take the Dutch Harness Horse for example. Also known as “Tuigpaard," Dutch Harness Horses are a warmblood breed of fine driving horses that began in the Netherlands after World War II. These work horses primarily worked in farms and fields; however, horse owners became intensely competitive and desired to breed the finest and most elegant horse as horses were a status symbol to farmers when they would visit the town.

As a result, breeders aimed to produce a refined, high-stepping horse that is easily recognizable. With only 40 sires and less than 2,000 broodmares, there are not many of this breed. Characteristics of the Dutch Harness Horse are: high carriage, long moment of suspension in trot, broad foreleg movement with high knee action, and powerful carrying ability.

When Aaron Jay Fisher, six-year breeder of Dutch Harness Horses was asked “why this breed?” he answered, “This breed is one of my favorite to work with because of their easygoing nature and movements. Their happy character makes training and working with them easy.” And they do well in the dressage world because of their unique movement, specifically their strong hind end working to push their front end into an extension, according to Fisher.

Of course, every horse has a story but some are a bit more unusual than others.  Take Aurora, who showed in the Filly of the Current Year class with her adopted mom Cara Mia. Aurora (know as Ora) is the third filly by Luminere, a PMU filly adopted by Mary Ann Luke of Silver Fern Farm. Wednesday’s forecast looks great. Classes will feature three-, four- and five-year-old Materiale, Foal, Filly, Colt, Mare, Stallion, and Mature Horse championships. See if you can pick the Grand Champion! Plus join Jonathan Clark from Select Breeding Services during the dinner break in the picnic area. Stop by the Silent Auction, and sample some of the great food!

The 2019 Dressage at Devon (www.dressageatdevon.org) is happening now through September 29 at the Devon Horse Show Grounds in Devon, PA. For reserved seating, visit dressageatdevon.org/box-office.

UC Davis Study Reports That Warmblood Fragile Foal Syndrome is Not Associated with Catastrophic Breakdown in Thoroughbreds

Researchers at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine have published the results of a study that investigated the frequency of the Warmblood Fragile Foal Syndrome (WFFS) mutation in Thoroughbreds. The study demonstrated that the WFFS mutation is not a genetic risk factor for catastrophic breakdown and is only present at a very low frequency in this breed.
Warmblood Fragile Foal Syndrome is inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion, meaning that a horse needs to have two copies of the mutation to be affected. WFFS is a fatal genetic defect of connective tissue characterized by hyperextensible, abnormally thin, fragile skin and mucous membranes. More than 700 Thoroughbreds were tested for the WFFS mutation, including 22 catastrophic breakdown fatalities. The allele frequency among all samples was 1.2 percent and the carrier rate (or horses with one copy) was 2.4 percent. None of the horses in the study had two copies of the mutation and only one of the 22 catastrophic breakdown cases carried the WFFS allele.
The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers the WFFS genetic test and recommends testing for all Warmblood breeds since the carrier rate in Warmbloods is estimated to be around 9-11 percent. Since the allele was found to be present in the Thoroughbred population, albeit at a low frequency, genetic testing could eliminate the possibility of breeding two carriers with the potential of producing an affected offspring.

Foundation Friday: Ladykiller xx

Here is the next installment of Warmblood Stallions of North America’s Foundation Friday.  Every other Friday we will be featuring a foundation sire - one who has been influential in the development of warmblood breeds. We pull from the incredible archive of The Horse Magazine, published by Chris Hector of Australia. Thank you, Chris, for permission to draw on your expertise!

1961–1979
164 cm
Brown
Breeder: Mrs. A. L. Adda (UK)

When the German Warmblood breeders in the 60s and 70s turned to the Thoroughbred for refinement and athleticism, there were a number of important stallions that played a key role in shaping the modern sport horse: none was more significant than Ladykiller.
While he stood in the far north of Germany, in Holstein, his influence continues to spread…

Ladykiller’s breeding features all the usual suspects found on jumping Thoroughbred pedigrees – Blue Peter, Phalaris, Son in Law – the great descendants of Bay Ronald. ...

More Wins for Stellar TVR Offspring

Standing Ovation New Horizons, by Stellar TVR

Horses from New Horizons Farm were the first Haflingers in North America to be presented to the German studbooks for breeding approval and registration. New Horizons stallion Stellar TVR was the first Haflinger stallion in North American history to be lifetime licensed and approved for breeding through Weser Ems and RPSI/Westfalen NA, in addition to the American Warmblood Society and Sporthorse Registry, and the American Haflinger Registry.  Stellar is also the only Haflinger in history to attend the North American 30 Day Pony Stallion Performance Testing, where he fulfilled his performance requirements to be approved for breeding. In 2017 Stellar was National Dressage Pony Cup DSHB Reserve Champion overall, Reserve Champion Mature Horse, and Champion Stallion. He also showed successfully at first level in 2017 at recognized shows throughout Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky, winning first place several times in both pony and open divisions.

Many of Stellar’s offspring once again had fantastic results at the Westfalen NA and Weser Ems inspections in 2018, as well as at the AHR inspection and classification. On June 26, 2018 a filly foal, Mia Suki ESH (Stellar TVR x Morning Dew CHP/Midres-Gold. V Liebstraum), bred and owned by Regina Esterman of Eclipse Sporthorses in Gainesville, Florida was awarded Premium status at her Weser Ems inspection. Some comments from the inspector, Sebastian Rhodes, included: true to type in breeding type and character, well-balanced, correct, naturally friendly and easy to handle, and impressive, supple movement with a canter that is good and well-balanced. Mary Procopio, owner of Haflinger stallion Stellar TVR, said she especially appreciated the inspector’s comments stating that Haflingers are another breed of Warmblood and sport pony, and that people are breeding Haflingers for sport, especially for their exceptional temperament and mind.

Rock My World New Horizons, by Stellar TVR
On August 4, 2018 at the Westfalen NA inspections in Petersburg, Virginia, StPrSt Rock My World New Horizons (Stellar TVR x R Noble Rose APF/Nobleman of Tudor Oaks), aka Maya, bred by Mary Procopio and owned by Karen Barnard, was award site inspection Champion and Premium status with an overall score of 7.4, including 8s on breed/sex type and overall impression and development. The inspector and Studbook Director, Otto Schalter, commented on Maya’s elegance, pretty face, good type and topline, energetic walk, active trot and well-balanced canter. As a foal, Maya was awarded a Gold Premium with a score of 8.0, and was the second highest scoring foal out of nine Warmblood and Sport Pony foals at the 2015 RPSI inspection. (Champion foal was her stablemate and another Stellar foal, Rivendell of New Horizons.)

Rafinja of New Horizons
It was exciting to see that the majority of horses at the Michigan Westfalen inspection site on August 31, 2018 hosted by New Horizons Farm were Haflingers! Two full siblings by Stellar TVR out of VPrst Ricola DTA/Adanac, StPrSt Rafinja of New Horizons (bred and owned by Mary Procopio) and StPrSt Rivendell of New Horizons Rivendell (bred by Mary Procopio, owned by Stephanie Lesperance at the time of the inspection and now owned by Beth Sorensen) were both awarded Premium status and entered into the top mare book. Rafinja was also awarded site inspection Champion over an outstanding group of horses with an exceptional score of 8.0 points—including a 9 on walk, 8.5s on type and overall impression and development, and 8s on trot and quality of conformation, with comments from the inspector/Studbook Director, Otto Schalter on her elegance, excellent walk with elasticity, good rhythm, long stride and movement that shows elasticity through her whole body; her elastic trot that reached underneath with a big step, and her freedom of shoulder. As a foal, Rafinja was awarded Gold Premium in 2014 at her RPSI inspection with an overall score of 8.1. This outstanding mare was also Gold classified at the 2018 AHR inspection one month earlier with 81 points!

Rivendell of New Horizons
Rivendell was the third highest scoring horse at the Westfalen Michigan site with an overall score of 7.5, including an 8.5 for her trot and 8.0 for correctness (foundation and movement). The inspector commented on Rivendell’s correctness, how well-developed she looked (she is 61 inches tall at age three and growing!), her elastic trot with swing and active hind leg, and how comfortable and rideable her trot and canter appeared. As a foal at the 2015 RPSI inspection Rivendell was awarded Gold Premium with a score of 8.2, and she was Champion foal over nine Warmblood and sport pony foals.

Two weanling Stellar foals were also presented at the Michigan Westfalen site. Mirracle Maja New Horizons out of Mythical TOF/Aristocrat TOF (purchased in utero by Leslie Walker, California) was awarded Champion foal and Premium status with an outstanding score of 8.0, including an 8.5 for breed/sex type and overall impression, and comments on her good walk, uphill trot with good elasticity, rhythm and good suspension, and her nice stride and freedom of shoulder. What made Maja’s score especially sweet was that Leslie and her husband Reed flew out to Michigan to attend the inspections!  Royal Araminta New Horizons out of VPrSt Ricola DTA (purchased in utero by Ursula Dodge, South Carolina) receiving an excellent score of 7.7, with 8s on breed/sex type and correctness (foundation and movement), and comments on her good type and topline and uphill trot.

Stellar's first foal, Ressonance of New Horizons
Stellar’s first foal, Ressonance of New Horizons (out of R Noble Rose APF), is excelling in dressage at recognized dressage shows in Alaska, winning Champion several times at first level. Many of his other foals are now started under saddle, demonstrating excellent trainability and rideability and a wonderful willingness to work. We can’t wait to see how they do at shows in 2020!

Stellar is standing the 2020 season at Spectrum Horse Service in Elsie, Michigan and is available to approved Warmblood, Thoroughbred, sport pony and Haflinger mares. His foals are eligible for registration through Weser Ems, Westfalen NA, AWSSR and AHR. For more information on Stellar and his offspring, please click here to visit our New Horizons website or contact Mary Procopio at newhorizonshaflingers@gmail.com or 517-410-8000.
